Double Build in Berkshire
Gordon had always aspired to self build. Fortunately, a few years ago he was finally able to find a property which allowed him to fulfil his ambition.
He purchased a home conveniently located in Berkshire, just outside of Reading with good transport links, which had outside space large enough to accommodate another dwelling. In fact, there was ample room in the rear garden to house two buildings.
Investigating this idea further, he began to research. Knowing he and his wife, Liz, wanted a sustainable build, when he came across Scandia-Hus, with their reputation for energy-saving timber frame homes, he decided to meet with the company.
With their show homes and offices locally situated in West Sussex, the couple proceeded to discuss their proposition with the firm. Liking the product and the people that they dealt with, Gordon and Liz went ahead with Scandia.
Together a plan was put forward for two properties, each design greatly influenced by not only the size of the plot but also the location, with the exteriors reflecting the surrounding area’s architecture.
It took two years to receive planning permission, with objections having been put forward by neighbours against the building of two as opposed to just one property. Overcoming this by appeal, and determined perseverance, the build began in May 2020.
A project manager by trade, Gordon took charge of the build, employing contractors that he knew from other jobs. The limited plot created challenges with regard to access and storage, but with his experience, Gordon was able to manage the difficulties.
The houses were completed in just over a year, and considering this was at the height of the pandemic with the associated issues in sourcing materials and obtaining labour, it is an impressive accomplishment.
Combining the airtight timber frame with high-quality insulation and PV panels, Gordon and Liz have produced an energy-efficient and low-impact home for themselves. Gordon thoroughly enjoyed his self build experience and cannot wait to do another.
